General Election November 2, 2021 (More Voting Information)
“Our Students, Our Future”. It’s not just a catchy slogan, but something that I believe. The students of today are going to impact the future, and I believe that education can open doors for each of them to do that. We have a great school district that provides opportunity for every child that comes through its doors. We have to stay committed to the idea that every student is important.
While I spent my early adult years first as an accountant, then as a teacher, I have spent many years since then as a mom and volunteer. I have loved the opportunities I have had to work with school-age children through volunteering at schools, non-profits and church. I have been able to learn a lot about how our district works through being a parent of three students and through serving in roles such as citywide PTO President and being a member of district committees. I feel led now to serve in another role.
If elected to serve as a school board trustee, my focus would be to provide support for all students and staff, to promote financial responsibility, and to plan for our future.
To provide support for all students and staff:
We are fortunate to live in a community that is highly supportive of education. Our community has its own unique qualities that make this a great place to be. With Texas A&M on our doorstep, we are a community of families not just from all over Texas, but from all over the world. This is why it is important for our district to continue providing a wide range of educational experiences. We should support students who are preparing for college while also supporting students who will choose to join the work force or military upon graduation. We should support classroom learning while also supporting the unique talents of all our students through extra-curriculars, CTE, clubs and more. Of course, we can’t provide all these things for our students without supporting our staff. As a former teacher, I understand the difference feeling valued and supported makes when you are putting your all into your job. My number one reason to run for school board is to serve the students and staff of our district.
To promote financial responsibility:
Our school district makes an investment in our children that goes well beyond the dollar amount they spend every year. Our students and staff are successful in many pursuits and we have a highly ranked district behind them. To be able to continue this success, there is a financial investment that we make as a community. As the district continues to grow and face challenges like school security, ever advancing technology needs, compensating staff well, inflation, and the need for new facilities, they must make good financial decisions. I was able to see part of this as I served on the Bond Committee this past spring. There are many needs, and prioritizing and planning for them is important. As a trustee, my background in accounting and interest in financial processes would help me to understand the financial position of our district and serve in a way to keep us financially responsible.
To plan for our future:
When I attended Leadership CSISD, we had a session about board service where former school board trustees spoke of their experiences. One shared about being on the board when a piece of land was bought. They said they were questioned about why the district should buy this piece of land that was “in the middle of nowhere”. In hindsight, we can see that College Station High School now sits on that piece of land that is surrounded by neighborhoods with families that have school-age children. Because of the foresight and planning of people who have served before me, our district has been able to meet the challenges of a fast-growing population. While we are in a great place right now because of the work that has taken place, more growth is expected and we need to continue to think of the future. I would like to serve not just for this time right now when my three children are attending school in CSISD, but for future students, staff and families.
